Step 1: Read - from the bottom of page 41 to the top of page 44 in Chapter three (note: you are only reading the conversation between the townsman and the stranger).

Step 2: Respond - Can you guess who the stranger is? What do you think the purpose of this conversation was? Why wasn't Hester sentenced to death? What is your first impression of this "stranger"?
